@Studies on creating marine parks and evaluations of proposed sites were initiated in Japan, just as they have been elsewhere. As a result, it was decided to establish protected sea areas as extensions of national parks and quasi-national parks, and in 1970 the Natural Parks Law was amended to authorize the government to so designate regions of the sea with important underseascapes as gmarine park zones.h
Distribution
@At present, there are sixty-four marine parks in Japan, distributed from the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido, in the north, to the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa, in the south.
