The Ministry of the Environment's International Coral Reef Research and Monitoring Center began coral reef monitoring around Ishigaki Island and in Sekisei Lagoon in 1998. The two figures below show distribution of coral reef coverage around Ishigaki Island. Coral reefs around Ishigaki Island suffered major damage from bleaching in 1998. Changes after that event have been understood through the monitoring. |
