| Background |
An international program for coral reef conservation, the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI), has been launched in 1994 and one of the main activities of ICRI is to establish Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN). The International Coral Reef Research and Monitoring Center is playing a role of GCRMN regional node for East Asian Seas as well as the center of national monitoring on coral reefs in Japan. |

The activities of the center are to gather, assemble and disseminate the information on coral reefs, to research and monitor the condition of coral reefs, and to educate and raise awareness on coral reef conservation. |
